Flags and signals
What each flag and light means, and what drivers have to do when they see it.
- Every flag and what it meansA quick reference to every flag used in Formula 1, from yellow and blue to the black flag with an orange disc, with what drivers must do when they see one.
- Yellow flagsA yellow flag means danger ahead. Drivers must slow down and can't overtake, and under double yellows in qualifying their lap time is deleted.
- Blue flags and lapped carsA blue flag tells a driver a faster car is about to pass. In a race, a car being lapped must let the leader through at the first chance or face a penalty.
- Black flags and warningsThe three black flags in F1. A black flag means disqualification, black with an orange disc means a dangerous car, and black and white is a warning.
- Lights, panels and pit exit signalsHow F1 uses start lights, trackside light panels, steering wheel displays and pit exit lights alongside flags, and what each signal means.
